I am a graduate student at SUNY Purchase, and will be receiving my Master's degree in Music Performance this spring. I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from SUNY Fredonia in 2016. Throughout my studies, I have been fortunate enough to perform with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra and learn from renowned flutists -- including Gary Schocker, Ian Clarke, and Tara O'Connor (my current teacher). I am relatively new to the Hudson Valley, and I am looking forward to building a studio of passionate and dedicated students in my new home!
EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching began when I was in high school. I taught two beginner flute students until I went to college in 2012. Since then, I have had students intermittently throughout my studies, and I am looking forward to building a permanent studio in the Hudson Valley. At SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Purchase, I was fortunate enough to take courses which focused on flute pedagogy, and I was able to practice the what I learned with my fellow flutists. These courses, as well as my own personal experience, has given me the skills I need to teach flutists of any skill level and any age.
METHODS USED
In lessons with beginner and intermediate students, I utilize the Rubank method books. Once a student has mastered those, we move onto etude books. I assign scale exercises and repertoire to all of my students, and I like to introduce beginner music theory when appropriate. My students practice duets and sight-reading in lessons with me, and this combination of materials gives the student the most comprehensive learning experience. I also encourage my students to bring any repertoire or music they find on their own to a lesson. I firmly believe that the highest quality of learning happens when a student is enjoying the music they're playing!
LESSON STYLE
I approach teaching with a supportive and open mind. It is important to me that I create a supportive learning environment, while also challenging the student to reach new heights. Every student is different, and every student learns differently; so it is my job to identify a student's learning style and tailor each lesson appropriately. A comfortable and engaging learning environment, in which realistic goals are set, is incredibly important for musical growth. I am there to teach my students, but I also thoroughly enjoy any opportunity to learn from my students as well.
