BM, Central Michigan University, Vocal Music
I love to watch students grow through music! I love sharing my joy of song through teaching voice. In 2009 I graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Music. Through my college experience, I have had the opportunity to sing all over the world. I have continued to perform in the Detroit area and recently moved near Ann Arbor, where I hope to continue sharing my love for music!
I began teaching youth choirs right after graduating High School. With excellent instruction, I began a more studied teaching approach through my pedigogy class at Central Michigan University. Also, I helped my fellow classmates prepare for their performances. I am beginning to teach privately after continuing my vocal study with a Vocal Coach in the Detroit area. Practice doesn't make perfect, but it does make progress! I ensure that my students continue to sing in the most healthy and easy way for them. Each student is different, not just in taste, but style and physical ability. I teach to the student. Singing should be fun, even though it can be tough and frustrating at times. I encourage students to perform as much as possible in any competitions, talent shows, or even for their religious affiliations to see their accomplishments flourish and to see the joy that their music brings to others!
For children, I keep it simple and fun, using a variety of methods to help them not only learn a song/songs, but the fundamentals of music reading, and theory. For older individuals, I prefer to work with their interests, and work towards their goals, through tailored lessons. I use a wide variety of styles, and challenge students to look outside their comfort zone-on occasion- to give them a larger repetoire that they may not have thought of. I also encourage all my students to share the pieces they love and wish to learn for fun or purpose.
I keep it light and simple. In lessons, I am a listener as well as a teacher. I use the students own words to work through music. I encourage students to focus on what things feel like, and describe them, so that we can focus on what is working well! After a few general lessons, I work with the student to set realistic goals for themselves, not only per project, but per lesson. I feel that focusing on what's right makes farther strides than clamping down on what went wrong, so that the student can be free to make mistakes and grow- not close up in fear of those mistakes. Goals may change by the week as students progress, and I strive to change those goals along with them, within a general structure and end goal in mind.
