Course Work: Sarah Lawrence College
I've always been a passionate and curious musician, ever since I picked up a flute in fourth grade. I have been dedicated to both flute and percussion ever since then, and continue to learn and play at Sarah Lawrence College. I am currently focusing on playing in pit bands for musicals, as they are my favorite performance setting. I have competed multiple times in the NYSSMA solo music festival, and have been part of an award winning concert band at the Lake Compounce Trills and Thrills Music Festival.
I am currently a music student at Sarah Lawrence College, where I study flute, percussion, chamber ensemble, blues ensemble, jazz ensemble, and pit music. I have been playing for 10 years as a flautist and a percussionist, and I have never stopped loving it. I think it's one of the most joyous and important jobs to teach music to the world, as a way for people to connect with themselves and with others. I have experience teaching kids of all levels, as well as assisting my music teachers in teaching classes.
I typically teach based on my own custom lesson plan, which consists of a combination of exercises and working on specific pieces, as well as listening and sometimes composing. For online classes, I find it is useful to give students things to listen to outside of the lesson, and even for students to record themselves playing sometimes. I try to find out what the student is interested in, and tailor my instruction based on the goal of the student. I often look for diverse and interesting artists and pieces to show students, to keep them inspired. I think the best motivator is passion and curiosity, which is why I like to let the student lead the way. I like to be able to offer students the tools they need to become the kind of musicians they want to be.
I believe that the key to a student's success in music is being motivated by passion. That is why I like to tailor each student's learning experience to their own individual interests, allowing them to press forward with the particular source of inspiration that motivates them to learn. It is a healthy combination of focus and enjoyment that results in the most enriching learning experience, which is why I make sure every exercise I assign a student comes with an understanding of the distinct purpose and goal of the exercise.
