Overview:
I have been an active and passionate freelance musician and music educator for the past 10 years. After completing my Bachelor's Degree at the University of Kansas, I moved to Chicago to pursue my Master's degree and studied with renowned flutist Dionne Jackson. While completing my Master's degree, I was able to study and learn from musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. I was able to perform at the CSO's Symphony Hall and was featured of Chicago's premeire classical radio station, WFMT. Prior to moving to Chicago, I ran a private flute studio out of my home for 6 years. I have also been on faculty at the Midwestern Music Academy, and was a clinician for the Blue Valley School District. While my love of performing has been a major motivator for me, my true passion is performing arts advocacy, education, and musical outreach. I have been involved with numerous non-profit organizations both in Chicago and Kansas City and have found that my greatest joy comes from sharing my love of music with others through education and outreach.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching flute 10 years ago and successfully ran a private flute studio out of my home, which incldued students of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds. I encourage regular practice, instrument maintenance, and practice journaling for my beginning students, which helps to promote progress and enjoyment of music making. Having been trained by world renowned French and American flutists, I try to use all of my training to create a unique and individual plan for each student. My students are encouraged to enter compeitions, as well as participate in studio recitals, and I believe that my status as an active and energetic performer in Chicago aides in setting a good example and motivating my students to perform as well.
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with fundamentals in tone (Trevor Wye) and Moyse daily studies (I still use it myself!) . Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
LESSON STYLE
The most important element of my teaching is seeing my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
