B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Life Coaching, Social Science, and Business Cognates)
I am a passionate and motivated teacher who loves working with students of all ages and share my love of music. I have been a musician for 20 years. I have played in concert orchestras, churches, and local venues. I have been a Worship Pastor or Music Director for over 10 years. My goal is to help everyone understand and enjoy the power of music. I help students learn to play by ear, understand music theory, and coach them into finding their own sound. Music is the universal language and when incorporated with the power of love, it has the ability to change lives.
I have been teaching music since 2010. I started at my local church teaching up and coming musicians how to play piano and drums and doing in-home music lessons. As a Worship Pastor a mega-ministry in Austin, TX, I was responsible for training the Worship residence and interns music theory and live performance. I currently am the Worship Director at Great Lakes Navy Base where I teach Navy Sailors assigned to the TSC choir music theory and live performance. I believe in teaching every student I have how to be passionate about their music, even if they're in the begging stages of learning how to play. It's the heart along with the sound that inspires the most. :)
For beginning students and youth, I typically start with music theory and proper positioning. I have found an easy method for playing songs almost immediately. For students that desire sight reading as a priority, I will start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and walk them through exercises that will keep them sharp and focused. For adults, I want to learn their goal and their niche. I will structure my course around their needs. Adults tend to have a clearer direction of where they want to be musically, and I can help them get there.
I encourage students to set their own goal, no matter the age. For youth, I desire the parents to be involved and provide encouragement in between lessons to ensure that students get the best result. I use positive reinforcement with my students as I have with my own children. I find that rewarding student with praise for accomplishing their goals helps them grow their confidence and self-esteem within their skill set. Helping students find songs that are impactful to them keeps them interested in learning and can be a great reward tool within the lesson.
