I am a passionate and motivated teacher of of trumpet and jazz improvisation. I have contributed articles on jazz studies and trumpet fundamentals for the International Trumpet Guild Journal. I have performed all over the world in a variety of musical settings from salsa to jazz to classical. I have performed artists such as Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca, Chris Calloway and Cab Calloway's Legacy of Swing, jazz saxophonist Teddy Edwards, the Los Angeles Opera, and the Los Angeles Southeast Symphony. My current performance focus is on developing trumpet techniques required for jazz improvisation. I continue to perform around Central Florida with the Space Coast Jazz Cats, the Sanford Jazz Ensemble, and the Space Coast Big Band.
I have performed with artists like Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca, Chris Calloway, Bobby Caldwell, Teddy Edwards, the Los Angeles Southeast Symphony, Johnny Polanco y Conjunto Amistad, Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, Tito Nieves, Los Angeles Opera among others. I have had a passion for sharing my knowledge and new information about trumpet playing all of my life. I have studied with some of the most renowned trumpet teachers of my generation including Mario Guarneri, Roy Poper, Uan Rasey, and William Fielder, my mentor for over 20 years. More recently, I taught applied trumpet at Bethune-Cookman University from 2005-2012. If you are preparing for an audition or simply want to have more fun doing what you do, I am your guy!
I always start with the fundamentals of sound production along with the musical fundamentals such as scales and sight-reading that go along with performance. I am extremely interested in all aspects of the biomechanics of trumpet playing, from breathing to embouchure to tone production to technique. Because of my intensive study of brass pedagogy I am very capable of teaching euphonium/baritone horn, trombone, tuba, and French horn. I try to make bad trumpet players better, and good trumpet players great.
I have always loved sharing knowledge with others. I especially love sharing my musical knowledge with others. I want people to have fun making music and I believe the way to do that is to find creative ways to make practice interesting. But making music is also about creating relationships so I encourage my students to take advantage of the ways that performing music opens new doors and creates avenues for new friendships. It all starts with building confidence as a performer and confidence comes with sounding good on a daily basis.
