I am an experienced music teacher that has taught kids and adults of all ages. I have a passion for working with different cultures, and have a solid background in teaching guitar, drums, and music theory. I am also a professional musician and singer-songwriter with a Bachelor's Degree from University of California, Berkeley. Furthermore, I studied music extensively in college including courses in sight-singing, guitar, piano, music theory, and a year and a half singing with the UC Berkeley choir.
I have been teaching guitar and drums since August of 2012. I started by teaching my friend's kids on the drums, ages 5 and 10. I also gave guitar lessons to adults of different ages, ranging from 20s to 80s. This includes a position as a Recreation Instructor for the City of Los Angeles. Music has been a major part of my life since I was a kid, and I would like to share this wonderful art form with anyone willing to learn. I am also a singer/songwriter that spends time recording in the studio and performing in the greater Los Angeles area.
I like to mix instructional books with opportunities to learn songs outside of the text books appropriate to the student's interests, style, and skill level. For the guitar, I like Terry Carter's Rock Like the Pros, Beginning Class Guitar Method and Intermediate Class Guitar Method. These books have comprehensive practice exercises, including classical and popular music exercises, and great songs of all levels to learn. The Mel Bay and Alfred music method books are also great for guitar or drums.
I would like to use my passion and experience to lead students in becoming more confident musicians. For example, I want them to progress musically through communication, guidance, practical exercises, and an understanding of music theory and proper technique. In addition, I am a strong believer in positive reinforcement. Challenges are always going to surface. When this happens, it is important to focus on the student's achievements, and build on this progression with patience and understanding.
Eric gave my son Nicholas one-to-one guitar lessons and I saw how quickly my son was learning and progressing each week. The sessions are fun, engaging and well-structured I would definitely recommend Eric to teach your kids guitar lessons.
