I have been playing and writing music for 15 years. I began playing guitar when I was 15 years old, and throughout my high school career I played in several different bands. By the time I got to college I performed with a classic rock band and began studying music theory for piano. In Delta State Universities Interdisciplinary program I began to take in a lot of musical knowledge very quickly. I learned many tools including: songwriting, music production, audio recording, synthesis, piano, live sound, mixing and even took a film scoring class where we put music to video which is a lot of fun. Not only did I learn about midi and music industry standards, I also had the opportunity to work with really amazing artists. One of my professors Mike Lacopelli was the recording engineer for Parliament as well as ran live sound for Aretha Franklin for 8 years. Later in my college career I began playing synthesizer with a band and working for Delta State’s Studio. I also worked in their computer lab teaching music software programs to newer students; the software programs included: Logic, Pro Tools and Garage Band. I currently have my own home studio where I run Pro Tools. I perform in a rock band playing rhythm and lead guitar as well as some keyboard/ synthesizer work. We have played many benefit shows as well as paying gigs and we recently released an album that I engineered and produced. I love making music as well as learning and teaching. I love watching others as well as myself grow musically. With every new musical opportunity comes learning and it’s so fun and exciting to think of what is waiting.
I have been fortunate to study under some remarkable professors as well as musicians. There are three individuals in particular that I will never forget. They changed my life. Their determination, work ethic, pure genius and passion for what they do will always stick with me. They raised my bar as a musician and set the bar for my teaching. As a teacher I strive to leave the same imprint on others that they left on me. I truly want to give to others what they have given to me.
The first step is to build a foundation, a base that all musical ability will be built on. This core will be built of fundamental elements. (This step is fun because you are able to play your instrument.) Once a foundation is created all newly learned material will add on to that base foundation. This means if you learn new material or go off on your on in any direction you will always have this musical foundation that all of your musical learning will be added to. (This step is really exciting, and leads you to new musical elements and new ideas.) Next you begin to learn musical techniques. Techniques are like having more arrows in your quiver. The more techniques you have the more easily you can express yourself. Much like, the more words you know the easier and more proficiently you can communicate how you feel. (This leads you to self-expression.) Self-Expression is the ultimate goal. Music is a form of language communication, and once you can clearly convey your message and music with your instrument then you have reached a level of musicianship. The learning never stops. That is the beauty. It excites me every day that I wake up to know that I am going to learn something new today and add to my musical ability. No matter whether it’s a crazy jazz chord or a new scale or an idea for a new song, I have a foundation that all musical concepts connect to. I want to make others as excited as I am about music. I want to add to your musical repertoire, and I want to give you a foundation that will lead you to the success that you are looking for.
I want to take you in the direction that you want to go. The approach is very hands on, you with your instrument. Music is endless so it’s important that we focus on direction and goals. With short term goals in place and regular practice you can achieve the success that you desire.
