2007-2011 - Berklee College of Music Merit Scholarship
Hi! My name is Eric DeVaughn. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland drumming has been my passion for over 15 years. I attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music on scholarship where I studied with some of the best teachers in the world including John Ramsay (Jazz Messengers) and Mike Mangini (Dream Theater, Steve Vai). I have since taught students in many cities across America and toured the world as a porfessional drummer. I now wish to share my passion for teaching and learning with the Nashville community!
My musical pursuits started in the 5th grade when I began playing in school band. Throughout Middle and High School I played in All County Jazz and Symphonic band. Upon my graduation I was accepted into Berklee College of Music on a merit-based scholarship and received my Bachelors of Music in Drumset Performance. It was at Berklee that I also began my teacher career and discovered the rewarded endeavor of sharing my passion for music with others. After college I accepted a position as a drummer for Holland America Cruise Line. This job allowed me to solidify and apply all I had been taught. I have now been teaching for the past 5 years and have toured the world with many great musicians.
My method involves a mixture of exercises and musical application. It is important for our development as musicians to understand what we are doing on both a technical and mechanical level. However, it is equally important to keep what we are doing relatable to the music that we want to play. Keeping lessons fun and engaging is a big part of seeing results. This idea applies to a beginning student learning single stroke rolls or an advanced student learning how to read a fusion chart.
Teaching is a passion of mine. Getting to share experiences with my students is truly rewarding and I know it is something I will pursue for the rest of my life. My teaching style is enthusiastic and engaging. I beleive no single approach or method works for every student and having the ability to adapt is an essential skill for developing lasting student/teacher relationships. I accomplish this with each student by underlining expectations through short term, mid term, and long term goals.
