Martha Ellen Stilwell School of the Arts
Fine Arts Distinction
I'm a committed and goal-oriented instructor who wants to share the love of music. I still consider myself a student because there are lifetimes of knowledge and experience there is to be had with our beautiful art. In 2012, I graduated from the Martha Ellen Stilwell School Of The Arts for Symphonic Band and Jazz Band where my main instrument was trumpet. I've done session musician work at Wondaland Records, American Sushi and Doppler Studios in Atlanta. I've also worked with the best jazz musicians in Atlanta regularly at jam sessions and always love learning from other musicians. Currently, I am a sound designer and multi-instrumentalist producer (trumpet, guitar, bass, keys)
My teaching experience began right after high school where I joined my musician friends teaching at K-Piano Music Academy. I taught children beginner piano schools K-5 in an afterschool program and have been teaching aspiring musicians mostly online since 2020. Now I want to expand my experience to the people in our community, encouraging musicians of all skill levels to bring them to another level they might not have expected. I focus on "learning how to learn" techniques that can take you far. I've found that learning classical music and modern music can help students learning great technique as well as being motivated to practice because they actually enjoy what they're playing. I love seeing my students participate in competition or performance and eventually even creating their own original music, so they can feel good about their progress.
There is no such thing as a "best method for everybody" but better methods for people's unique needs. For beginners, texts from Hal Leonard, Jamey Aebersold and Alfred's piano course are great examples to guide students through, but ultimately the specific text doesn't matter as long as I can teach the fundamentals necessary to be performance ready. After the basics are mastered, I'll introduce the skills needed for a first recital. For many adults, that could include playing at an open mic, playing a piece at church or writing their first song.
It brings me joy to see one of my students become passionate about music. It is something that can be taught under the right circumstances. With that knowledge, I recognize the importance of guiding progress to his or her own pace. I always set goals and aim to teach something new every lesson. Setting short term goals shows real accomplishments that help fuel students motivation to stay dedicated. As I said before, I am a student as well and I learn a lot by teaching. So I actively seek what inspires each student and I create a custom lesson plan for them.
