Bachelor of Arts in Music (Voice & Piano) - Salem State University
I am a singer/songwriter/keyboardist. I graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Salem State University, where I studied voice & piano. I have a background in musical theater and have been performing in shows for about ten years. I sing in the band and the choir weekly at Second Congregational Church in Peabody. I also volunteer monthly as a keyboard player in the band at Christ The King Church in Wakefield. I have taught dance classes and sing alongs at day programs for adults with disabilities as well as leading music for patients with dementia in nursing homes. I also volunteer at my church nursery and teach song and dance there as well. I have a passion for sharing music with the people who need it most and am looking forward to starting one on one lessons.
My teaching experience includes working as Skills Instructor at a day program for adults with disabilities. There, I taught dance classes and sing alongs, meditation groups, cooking groups & general life skills. I have also lead music in nursing homes for patients with dementia/Alzheimers. I have traveled throughout high school and college, along the east coast, to perform with choirs at churches, schools, and public events. I plan to design a curriculum that encourages students to be creative & express themselves. My vocal curriculum incorporates acting, playing the character and recital etiquette for more advanced folks. I can teach beginner piano/songwriting and beginner to advanced vocal lessons.
I will start my beginner piano lessons with "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" & "John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Part I." Basic music theory such as determining lines & spaces (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge & F.A.C.E) and basic 1-5 fingering patterns. Depending on the level of the beginner, we could practice "Hot Cross Buns," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" "Happy Birthday" or "Ode to Joy." I will assess students based on knowledge of music theory and muscle memory/ability to play. For a vocal curriculum, I will teach basic vocal warm ups that will improve range, tone & musicality. We will work on breathing exercises and relaxation techniques as well as performance etiquette and acting (the story behind the story) and the expression of the story. In addition to classical vocal techniques, students can decide the genre they want to apply it to, such as pop, musical theater, jazz, country, R&B, etc.
My teaching style is definitely dependent on the students’ personal goals. There will be much communication between us about what you intend to get out your lessons & I will shape my teaching techniques to make sure those needs are met. I want you to get out of your lessons everything you hoped you would. My hope as a teacher is to provide lots of encouragement so that the student feels accomplished in the work they have completed. At the end of the day, we are working hard but we are also having fun!
