I LOVE teaching music to students! I have been involved with music throughout my life but began formally learning music at the age of eight starting with piano and voice lessons. When I turned eleven I added percussion to the mix and found a whole new world of fun! I majored in music at Centenary College for two years before changing my major and graduated with a minor in music. Through music I've met wonderful people, been able to experience the wide range of emotions it can bring, and had the pleasure of teaching some wonderful students. I currently play piano and sing at a church for their worship service in Lafayette, LA.
I first began teaching music students in 2002, with my very first student being on guitar. Since then I've been priveleged to teach beginning guitar, beginning drums, and piano to students as young as 3 and as old as 60. I also worked at Gymboree Play n' Music where I taught music classes to children and their parents from 6 months old through 5 years old. While in college, I played gigs with my band in north and south Louisiana, directed music for contemporary worship services at various churches, led youth bands, and participated in the Centenary College's: Jazz Band (piano & drums), Cantare Choir (voice), Wind Ensemble (percussion), Percussion Ensemble, and Chamber Orchestra (percussion). For the past two and half years I've worked for a local Symphony Orchestra teaching music to young children in both Lafayette and Acadia Parishes at both school setting and in private lessons.
I believe that music should be FUN! To that end I tailor all my lessons to meet each student's individual needs. Not everyone learns the same way, however I believe that students should receive the following components in their lessons: ear training (being able to hear whether they are playing correctly), sight-reading (being able to read the written notes, music theory (writing & reading the written notes on a page), and technique (playing on the instrument). I like my students to get the chance to play music that helps them learn and music that they already love whether it be video game tunes, disney songs, classical pieces, or songs from the radio. At the end of each semester I offer my students a free recital where they can both show what they've accomplished and learn to play in front of an audience in a positive environment. (Typically I hold one recital at the beginning of December and one at the beginning of May.)
My teaching style is generally high energy, however I try to do what I feel is best for each student in conjunction with their parents. I like to build relationships with my students and their families that will lead to a positive reinforcing environment where my students can truly learn, have fun, and grow both as a musician and as a person. I like to see my students having fun but also really learning and retaining the knowledge. I believe in finding what motivates a student and using that to help them stick with their instrument and grow their passion. I've been know to give stickers or a prize on the occasion for my younger students when needed!
