I am passionate about music and singing. I love to perform and I love to share my passion for music through teaching. I graduated from Portland State University with a Master's in Vocal Performance.I am a student of reknowned baritone Richard Zeller. He is a valuable resource to me for my own singing, as well as a source of teaching advice. I am most experienced with classical repertoire, including songs in German, French, English, and Italian, but I also teach some musical theatre. Whatever style of music you want to sing, I can help you improve with a good, solid foundation of technique.
I started teaching college age students as an Undergraduate as part of my vocal pedagogy class, and have also taught students for my Graduate vocal pedagogy class. I continued teaching some after the classes concluded. Early in 2013, I officially opened my own voice studio and have been taking new students ever since. I enjoy teaching voice students of middle school age through adulthood. I let my students choose what style of music they would like to sing so that they will enjoy working on it. I started teaching beginning piano lessons in September of 2013. I enjoy helping students learn to read music while having fun playing pieces that they like. I will take younger piano students, so long as they have the ability to sit still and focus for the duration of a 30 minute lesson.
My voice lessons are tailored solely to the abilities and interests of the student. If they prefer classical repertoire, we work through various art songs in Italian, German, French and English, focusing on technique and diction. If they prefer musical theatre, we have fun with the acting side of it, while learning good technique. I will even do some pop songs, if the student so desires, but these songs are generally much simpler. For piano students I use the Faber lesson books while supplementing with other pieces and materials.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student make progress while developing their passion for music. During a lesson, I make corrections based on what I see needs to be improved. I make sure to encourage the student, praising them for their successes. I think it's important to have strong communication during a lesson. I want to know what the students is feeling, and I want them to have awareness of their own body as well. I try to maintain a balance of constructive and positive feedback. In this way, the student knows when they are making progress.
Erin has been a wonderful voice/piano teacher for our 7 year old daughter. She is talented, patient, and has a wonderful demeanor. She has been consistent with her teaching in piano and voice. She keeps record of where the students leave off so that they know what to expect the following week. I would definitely recommend Erin to anyone looking for a skilled piano/voice teacher.
