My love of music and teaching blossomed in high school and all my life has only grown stronger. I graduated from Grove City College with a Bahelor of Arts degree in Music Education, which has given me experience in teaching classroom music grades K-12. However, my greatest joy has always been in private music instruction, which I have been doing since high school to students of all ages and levels. My other music delight is composition, and I have written scores for my own esemble group to perform at weddings and events while also selling some online. I also wrote an arrangement for a fellow music teacher's ensemble to perform for their spring concert. I love the flexibility that comes with teaching and writing my own compositions, and many of my students have studied improvisation and composition with me as well.
EXPERIENCE
I have been capitalizing my love of music with teaching since I was in high school, giving piano and cello lessons to children and adults of all ages and proficiency levels. I enjoy organizing yearly recitals for families and the local community to attend. I was involved with PMEA and the local Schubert Club in my area, participating in festivals, earning a gold cup in two years, and later volunteering with staff while my own students participated in the festivals. I continued to teach through college, when I also became a member of NAfME and the educational honors society of Kappa Delta Pi. As an undergraduate I studied music education, performed with cello in the orchestra, took composition studies and a world music class, and achieved an A for my senior recital performance on the piano. Graduating from Grove City College with a bachelor of music and a K-12 teacher’s certification, I have since been employed as a substitute teacher while continueing to provide private music lessons to students of all ages.
METHODS USED
I strongly believe that every person can succeed in music given proper attention and opportunity, and therefore focus my lessons differently for individual students according to their skills and interests. For beginning students, unless they are adults or already proficient in another instrument, I always start with my favorite method books to ensure the fundamentals are firmly established. I usually realy on Alfred's Basic Piano Course, Strictly Strings, Suzuki, or Essental Elements depending on the instrument I'm teaching.
LESSON STYLE
Because every person is different, learns differently, has different interests, and diffferent strengths, I believe that flexibility is one of the most important goals of a good teacher. I treat every student as an individual and always adapt my teaching style and method in whatever way seems to best benefit the student. According to my students' varying skills and interests, my lessons have included different focuses: technique, improvisation, sight-reading, performance, theory, hymns, composition, history, or accompaniment. I truly believe every person can experience the joy of mastering an instrument. I am very enthusiastic and very eager to help every student develop a love of music! Age and skill do not matter- only a willingness to learn is needed to succeed.
