I have been a musician for over fifteen years, and there is nothing quite as exciting to me as the opportunity to share my love of music with new people. Music has been such an important part of my life, the idea that I could contribute to someone else's passion is very important to me. I spent four proud years as a member of the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Marching Band, where I acted not only as a student myself, but also as a performer and a teacher. As a member of the leadership team I helped incoming members learn everything they needed to know in order to make our organization the best that it could be. The joy I experienced in leading my section has inspired me to continue that work with others, helping them get a good start in what will hopefully be a lifelong relationship with music.
EXPERIENCE
In addition to working with Musika, I also act as a classroom aide for after-school music programs for several schools in the DC Metro Area. I am often not the only teacher in the classroom, which means that I can give each student the attention that they deserve. In large group classes, it is easy for a child to feel left out, but I feel that it is important to give them as much individual attention as I can offer, especially when a student is excited about something that they have learned and are eager to show me what they can do. My favorite thing to ask a student is x22Can you show me what you have learned?x22 I am very excited to have new students with whom I can share my knowledge and love of music.
METHODS USED
I will typically begin with Alfred's Basic Piano Library book for piano students, as I believe that the best way to truly learn music is by playing songs instead of exercises designed to demonstrate techniques and concepts. Alfred's Piano Library offers exercises in the forms of music that increases with difficulty as new material and concepts are introduced to the student. With younger students especially, I always start with instructing the student on the basics of their instrument, such as the proper terminology, how the instrument actually produces sound, and proper maintenance. For children, I would encourage them to work towards recital performances and solo work, or to participate in bands. For adults, I would be flexible and open to what they would want out of the experience and encourage and guide them in their goals.
LESSON STYLE
Playing music has been such a large part of my life, my goal is to try and cultivate that experience in my students. First and foremost, the student needs to enjoy themselves! How can someone make beautiful music if they do not enjoy music lessons? I believe that music can be learned by building one lesson on top of the other, so each lesson will have a specific, reachable goal in mind, which will usually build on what was worked on the previous lesson. Of course, the lessons are all about the student, so everything is designed with their needs in mind, and going at their own pace is the best way to ensure that they are learned in a comfortable environment.
