Overview:
My name is Ernesto Alejandro Álvarez-Ramírez, and I was born and raised in Cuba. In my home country, I received an extensive musical education. I began studying choral music and piano at the age of 6 at the Art Vocational School in my hometown Las Tunas, in the province of the same name. At 13 years old, I continued my studies at the Music Conservatory in Matanzas, where I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Music, specializing in Choral Conducting and Voice. In 2012, I began my studies at the University of Arts (ISA) in Havana, with a double major in Composition and Choral Conducting. I finished my Master Degree in Conducting and Voice at Oakland University.
EXPERIENCE
I began my work as Music Director at Old St. Patrick's Church, part of the Diocese of Lansing. During my time there, I was able to develop a relevant choral program based on the characteristics and aesthetics of the parish. The choir grew, and I improved the vocal and musical skills of all its members, which allowed us to effectively support all liturgies. We performed several concerts focused on traditional sacred music, including a grand farewell concert at Sweet Heart of Mary Church in Detroit in June of 2022. In December of the same year, I began my work as Music Director at St. Thomas More Church in Troy, part of the Diocese of Detroit. My work there was different from my previous position. This was a more “contemporary parish”. I used mostly contemporary catholic repertoire and had a strong focus on developing the vocal technique of the choir members. My work at both parishes was successful, and I am confident that my references can attest to the quality of my work as a conductor. I have over 10 years of experience working as a Private Music Instructor.
METHODS USED
In the case of piano, my teaching methodology in centered on technique and music theory. It is imperative to learn the right hand positioning and posture, ensuring music reading skills and theory are developed through exercises focused on agility and coordination. As an instructor, I instill on my students respect for the piano as an instrument and the necessary dedicated time to achieve progress during the learning process. Vocal coaching is about the discovering and understanding of one's voice. I have over 10 years of experience coaching kids and adults, and as Conductor with a minor in Voice, I and am very effective on identifying ways to improve my student's singing skills.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching music should never sacrifice intellect. My teaching style is focus to develop my student's own artistic personality. I always remind my students the importance of growing as a musician using your unique perception of music. That is what makes every student special. In addition, I combine, not just different music styles, but also, different types of art to create a well-rounded view of the performance. The understanding of the relationship of music with another arts and history is as important to me as the technique itself. I engage the student minds in the learning process using references and analogies from different artwork.

I admit that I do not have much experience with voice teachers, but I do think that Ernesto is a very good one. I say this because he is not rigid in his methods and listens to me when I express that I do not understand something or that I want to practice a scale repeatedly just to get the hang of it. He tries different exercises based on what my response is, and improvises to help me to learn more about using my voice well. He has a sense of what is best overall, and considers breath, tone, volume, and expressivity when giving a person feedback. He is classically trained, yet is open to teaching different styles of singing (like jazz, pop, blues, and broadway). Since he comes to where I live, he brought a keyboard the first time, but since then he uses his own voice as the benchmark. He will bring one when specific songs will be practiced I am pretty sure. He has a flexible schedule as well and that is a nice perk.
