Hello! My name is Ethan and I am a percussion performance major at Iowa State University. I have performed in 4 different countries with the Iowa State University Wind Ensembles. I have also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and marched in both the Macys Parade and the Dublin St Patricks Parade. In high school I was a 4 year varsity show choir drummer, as well as a 4 year drumline member, and a 3 year Wind Symphony member. I'm currently preparing for my second year of college and will be spending the summer performing and teaching.
I have been teaching private lessons for around 3 years, with experience teaching in all aspects of percussion, including drumset, marching percussion and concert percussion. I teach both virtually and in person either at my home studio in Cedar Rapids or in Ames when I'm at college. I believe that a combination of all the various styles of percussion is the best way to get a full grasp of drumming, however if you have specific interests I will do my best to focus on those when possible in the lessons.
I use a variety of books, tailored to the student based on my initial viewing of their abilities and what they are interested in learning. I also create my own lesson plans using exercises and music I have written myself. No two lesson plans will be the same as everyone learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses. I also strive to make lessons continuously fun and interesting. I try to encourage creativity in music in both performing and writing your own drum parts to music that you enjoy.
I like to start out with new students by asking about them and what they want to learn and if they have any prior experience. I then like to make a custom lesson plan and practice schedule for my students, as well as book recommendations to work from. I use MIDI input keyboard and drumset for virtual students and then my studio for in person students. I prefer google meet but I can also do Zoom or FaceTime. I like to challenge my students but try to keep lessons fun, stress free, and intelligent.
