My name is Ethan F. and I graduated From ACM @ UCO with an associates in Guitar performance. During my time at UCO I studied music theory, live performance, music business, and music history. Multiple time's a semester I would be put into random bands with other students and we would be required to pick a set list of songs and them perform them for a live audience within a few weeks. I started playing guitar when I was 14 and have loved it ever since. I think that teaching others the joy of music and guitar would be an amazing opportunity to not only grow as a musician myself, but also help other people grow in their skills.
I began teaching myself to play Guitar as a teenager and eventually taught myself to play other instruments as well. During this time I would learn all of my favorite songs by ear or with the help of tabs. Once I had started attending the Academy of Contemporary Music I learned more advanced music theory that relates to general music and Guitar. During this time I met my first guitar teacher who inspired to learn more and more about theory and guitar and even taught me about the production and business side of music.
The lesson material is completely dependent on the student. I believe the most important things for someone to learn are keys, chords, scales, intervals and improvisation. For students are just beginning the first step is to learn the notes on the neck of the guitar. The next step is to begin learning intervals that way the student is able to build chords on the neck. From there is goes on to chords then scales and then keys. Once notes and chords or scales have been covered the student can also begin learning songs of their choice to put what they've learned into practice.
Everyone starts differently and everyone learns differently. I think that the material covered in lessons should be dependent on what the student knows and what the student is interested in. Even though theory can be complicated and at times tedious I think the most important goal is to be able to enjoy both learning and playing your instrument. Weekly goals will be set for students to ensure they study the lesson subjects. Eventually students will begin learning songs on their own, writing chord charts, and being improvisation practice.
