2013 Oberlin Conservatory Merit Scholarship
I am a musician and teacher from Nyack, NY and I have been teaching private and group lessons for 8 years. I am as passionate about teaching as I am about playing, and I am always high energy and motivated to help students achieve their goals. I graduated from Oberlin Conservatory in 2018, and in my years as a musician I have performed with the likes of Gregoire Maret, Steven Bernstein, Ingrid Jensen, and more. I have performed across the tristate area and through out the east coast and northeast Ohio, including illustrious venues such as the Beacon Theatre, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and many more. I am currently teaching at P.S 246 in Brooklyn, and would love to gain more private students.
I have been teaching for 8 years, getting my start in my home town of Nyack, NY teaching jazz combos and private lessons at the Nyack Summer Music Camp. Since then, I taught private lessons to students of all abilities at Oberlin for 5 years, I was a staff teacher at the Avon School of Music in Avon, Ohio, I was a music instructor and counselor at Camp Encore/Coda in Maine, as well as other camps more local to NY, and I am currently an employee of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, where I am teaching music to kids at P.S 246.
Depending on the level and specific interests of the student, I garner my curriculum towards their needs. For beginners, I start with Alfred's beginning drum method, and as they progress I incorporate my own additions to the material, as well as digging into the interests of the student. I am big on sharing recordings with students and introducing them to worlds of music they have likely not heard before. Depending on which areas the student naturally gravitates towards, I adjust the amount of time I spend on different areas, while never compromising the fundamentals of learning an instrument.
I am in love with music and I believe that is the most essential thing to convey to the student. To show up with energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to share the knowledge that I have gained from others who exhibited the same enthusiasm towards me is beyond rewarding. I am very deliberate about what I assign for students to practice, and I like to make a timeline of where I'd like the student to be at certain points in time. I am solely interested in helping students progress to the best of their ability, and having fun while doing so.
