Overview:
I hope to inspire a love of music in others through my teaching, playing, and composing. In 2012 I graduated from Eastman School of Music with High Honors, and in 2015 I received a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from New York University, and in 2022 I received a PhD in Music Performance from NYU. I have performed in Italy, Canada, Costa Rica, and throughout the United States, and have taught various styles and instruments to students of all ages. I personalize my curriculum to each student, based on their goals and strengths, whether they are a student aiming for first chair in the school band, or an adult looking for a rewarding hobby.
EXPERIENCE
I am an adjunct faculty member at NYU, teaching saxophone, clarinet, and keyboard, and music theory. I began teaching saxophone when I was 15, to beginning players at local middle schools and quickly built a full studio of young saxophonists, clarinetists, and flutists. Since then, I have taught at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, led masterclasses in San Jose, Costa Rica, Orange County, CA, Rochester, NY, and the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In 2015 I served as Adjunct Instructor of Applied Saxophone at New York University, developing and implementing a curriculum for undergraduate saxophonists that spanned from early jazz to modern pop. I enjoy engaging with students of all experience levels and help them develop facility on their instrument and an understanding of how music works.
METHODS USED
When teaching younger students, I prioritize developing a passion for music through engaging repertoire and positive encouragement, while instilling proper technique and organized practice with weekly progressive assignments. I also establish practice expectations and share progress with parents. In every lesson I demonstrate concepts by performing various woodwinds and piano, and by singing. Advanced students work towards external goals established in consultation with both students and parents like school concerts, honor band/orchestra auditions, or college applications, encouraging students to grow their musical community outside of the lesson studio. I also enjoy teaching adult learners. I have taught music journalists, engineers, and retired professors; students who do not wish to learn notation and students who identify as hearing-impaired. With these students, who come to lessons with their own fully formed relationship to music and limited time to practice, my pedagogy is built from the ground up to help them achieve their goals and maximize their enjoyment.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching takes the form of private lessons on flute, clarinet, and saxophone, and courses at NYU. In each educational situation, I aim to establish clear goals and assignments, build confidence through positive reinforcement, and explain concepts in an engaging manner appropriate to each student. I enjoy teaching students with diverse learning goals and strengths and learning about the unique ways every student connects with music intellectually and emotionally. I set realistic goals for my students, but emphasize the importance of the process more so than the end result. I maintain a positive disposition in lessons with an understanding of the student's non-musical responsibilities, and stress the importance of regular commitment and incremental improvement, no matter how small. I do not believe that hard work
