Hello! I am so glad you are here! Congratulations on taking the first steps to learning the flute or improving the skills you already have--whether you study with me or with anyone else, learning an instrument takes discipline, open-mindedness, and courage (and so does teaching it for that matter!). I am a professional flutist in the NYC area with two masters degrees and 10+ years of teaching experience--in fact, teaching flute was my first job! I love seeing my students succeed and being a part of their personal and musical growth. I am proud to offer access to myy complete studio library to all students. They will receive a link to my digitized music library. The library features staples from the repertoire, a vast pool of baroque, classical, romantic, new music, rudiments, and more.
I am the former principal flute of the Queen City Chamber Orchestra of Cincinnati, principal of Seven Hills Baroque Orchestra, founding member of both the Cincinnati Camerata Baroque and the Aurora Ensemble, and a leader in the New Hampshire music non-profit Silentwoods Collective. With two masters of music degrees (one in flute and one in historical performance) I am equally at home teaching modern flute/piccolo and historical flutes. A former student of the acclaimed composer Brian Nabors at the Cincinnati Conservatory, I also love teaching composition students. With a teaching style that focuses on individualism, my goal with each student is to develop their strengths and support their weaknesses with the traditional mentor-apprentice relationship that celebrates the personal needs of the pupil.
I work with my students in the traditional mentor-pupil model, so you and I would work as a team to develop your playing. Because of this, all my lessons are one-on-one, ensuring each student gets the individualized attention they deserve and require for learning the flute and to accomplish their specific goals. Some students have dreams of going to conservatory, some want to get into a higher band at school, others just want to play beautiful melodies for family and friends. Your goal is my goal, and we will make it happen together.
No one teaching style fits every student and it is my job to figure out what methods speak to you. The only blanket statement I can make is that every student deserves support, and more so, they perform better when they are supported and when realistic (yet still challenging) goals are made between both the student and teacher. In addition, regardless of level, I believe it is important to seek out performance opportunities and I like to use these opportunities as a motivator for the student to practice. In my opinion, preparing for outside opportunities is the most motivating and rewarding method for student progress.
