Overview:

I have experience working with children and adults of all ages. I work with voice and piano students. I also coach singing, my training in Bel Canto technique has been very successful with all singers. I enjoy teaching lessons to all ages 2 to 72. My concentration was classical and operatic but also have training in Musical Theater interpretation and jazz styling and have completed programs in jazz improvisation. I encourage students to perform and share their gifts to uplift others. My students should share their performances online at family parties and are encouraged to perform in nursing homes and shelters. I encourage them to participate in programs and ensembles. I completed many programs growing up at Interlochen arts camp, North Carolina school of the arts, Indiana university music clinic, jazz improvisation ensemble with Michigan youth ensembles, sister’s in jazz, Interlochen Arts Academy, 2 years at Cleveland Institute of Music, Bachelor of Music from University of Hawaii at Manoa, 10 years of post graduate studies.

EXPERIENCE

I started teaching voice and piano a year out of college. My first piano student was 2 years old. What a thrill! My oldest student was a voice student 73 beautiful! I’ve taught an array of singers from different genres. novice basic singing lessons to other students having professional experience. My coaching and training encompasses a variety of teaching styles. I can tailor my lessons to the needs and interests of the student being the early beginning piano student or beginning voice or seasoned voice student. I encourage performance.

METHODS USED

For the beginner learning to play the piano for the first time, I typically start with Bastien’s or Alfred’s piano books, theory, and technique. For Older beginners, I start with scales, theory and technique exercises combined with early repertoire and ear training. For vocal students, I focus on warm- ups, and technique exercises, followed by coaching. Work with acquiring sight singing skills, ear training, theory, technique and interpretation. I encourage them to perform participate in ensembles and/or apply to programs.

LESSON STYLE

I work out of Bastien and Alfred’s book and encourage my students to perform online, family parties, and nursing homes. Tailor each lesson to the students specific strengths and areas of difficulty. And tailor repetoire to students wants and needs choosing material and approaching repetoire with the objective of maintaining students passion and enthusiasm for music while exploiting their strengths and achievement. For singers I make sure they never lose passion for singing and articulate theory and vocal objectives in singing warmups to be carried over into their singing. I also foster ear training, fitness, theory, sight singing and stylizing skills so they can be constructively creative and free.
