Evan Michael H. started playing drums at age 5 and never looked back. Born into a musical family, Evan got his first stage experience in a family band with his dad. As teenagers, Evan and his friends created the rock band Escapist and performed at venues across California’s central coast. In 2010, Evan co-founded the rock band STAGE 11 where he's performed drums and other percussion across three albums, multiple residencies, and dozens of independent concerts across LA, including opening for Jefferson Starship at Whisky-a-Go-Go in 2018. Evan has also done session work as a drummer-for-hire with independent rock bands, most recently on Sub:Om’s Back to the Source. When Evan's not drumming, he's composing. He's created music and mixed sound for independent film and new media, and recently won a Best Sound Design award for his work on indie feature The Good Hearts Club. Evan's style is heavily influenced by classic jazz and funk records, the ‘90s music that sampled them, and a lifelong obsession with Mozart. Evan believes drums are the most fun and creative music instrument you can play, and anyone can learn.

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with fundamentals: rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. As a member of the Total Drummer drum teaching program, I have access to enormous libraries of teaching material, including the main syllabus, famous song charts, drumless play-along tracks, and everything else my students may need.
