MM SUNY Purchase 2019
Professional bassist, and beginner-intermediate keyboard teacher. I teach keyboard with iPianoLab, a great beginner to intermediate keyboard learning platform designed specifically for kids aged 5-10, and can be tailored to suit adults as well. I have played Jazz bass for the past 10 years, and currently gig around NYC and in the area. Music is my passion, the power of music can be healing and life changing. Music is accessible for anyone, as long as the desire to play is there. I specialize in crafting lessons to connect with peoples' experiences and taste.
Taught with iPianoLab, keyboard program for kids age 5-10, for last 2 years. I teach private lessons as well as group lessons, in schools and privately. I have played bass professionally for the past 10 years, playing in jazz bands, pop bands for private events, and many other genres of music, playing upright and electric bass. I currently serve in a church band that I've been a part of for the past 4 years, playing a mix of traditional Gospel, Caribbean worship, and CCM. I also make arrangements for band and keyboard.
I tailor the program to the student's needs. A student seeking a traditional eduction would be presented with method materials such as Simandl, as well as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Pop, jazz and other genres of music could be explored, depending on the goals of the student. As a jazz musician, I find that learning multiple styles opens up whole worlds of expression and concept. I have studied with classical players as well, and have worked through method books and excerpts. I prefer to set a high standard, while keeping a sense of fun.
It is very important to set a high standard of playing and technique, so that learning is constantly happening. That said, that standard should be approached with compassion and humor, casting the lifelong pursuit of virtuosity an exciting challenge even when it's frustrating. Especially with youth, cultivating a positive attitude and discipline is a key to success. This can be done through musical study. It is important to me to keep the student engaged, and be clear about their motivations for studying: their parents and their own unique drive.
