BA, The University of New Orleans, Film and Music Theory and Compostion
Overview:
I was raised in a musical family. My father, brother, and sister all played guitar. I began playing drums in the school band at ten years old. At twelve I got my first drum set. At fourteen I began playing in a band and started playing shows. In college I played drums in four different bands playing shows all over the city. After college I played with a punk band, a psychedelic rock band, a folk-rock band and an R&B artist. I took classical guitar lessons while getting my minor in music theory and composition and I have been playing for eight years.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught friends and family how to play both drums and guitar. I am always happy to share my knowledge of music theory and composition. I enjoy teaching and have a passion for music. I give great guidelines and techniques for writing original music. I can help students convey emotion in their music using music intervals, chord types, scales, modes, and rhythm. I have patience and understanding of the learning process. I encourage practice on a regular basis to develop muscle memory, familiarity, and confidence. I will develop a lesson plan based on the needs and goals of the student.
METHODS USED
First the skill level of the student must be determined. Then the goals of what the student wishes to learn and wants to be capable of playing. Next we will set goals together and a time frame to achieve their goals. I will then develop a lesson plan based on what the student wants to achieve with exercises and practice techniques to build the muscle memory and strength required to play. I encourage recitals and performances or even just a demonstration to friends and/or family members of the student to show their progress and to experience of a live performance.
LESSON STYLE
I have a relaxed and fun style of teaching. I encourage the use of rudiments and fundamentals to build good playing habits and to build strength and speed. Practice is an obligatory part of learning and is expected to become routine for the student. Practice and learning will be fun! Learning to play songs that we love is the best part! The student and I will make a list of songs and styles to work towards playing. Setting goals is a huge part of success. We will also track and acknowledge the student's accomplishments to encourage them and keep them learning.
