Overview:
Hello and welcome, my name is Evan, and I am so happy that you chose to look at my profile. I received my Bachelor's Degree from Syracuse University in 1998. I minored in the Music Industry and performed with the Marching Band, Basketball Pep Band, co-founded a lacrosse band, and became a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary Band Fraternity. I received both a Masters and a Law Degree from Syracuse in 2002, but never stopped playing, and have been given the nickname of "The Human Jukebox" since I can recognize and perform nearly any song I have ever heard. I began giving lessons in 2002, focusing at the time on voice and mostly band instruments. As the years went on, I kept remained an 'edutainer'- both a musical storyteller, and an educator with a strong focus on tying music into all subjects for all ages.
EXPERIENCE
I am a self-taught saxophonist and pianist; and bring the enthusiasm and passion into all the music I perform and record professionally, as well as the lessons I teach. I am a permanently-certified NY State Social Studies Teacher, but have been teaching music, the music business, and giving lessons since 2002. I have been fortunate in my musical experiences to play stages such as the Apollo theater, Madison Square Garden, and BB King's in Manhattan. I have performed with nationally touring bands and individuals while living both in New York City and in Syracuse NY, and have performed on cruise lines. Since relocating to Western NY, I have been a journeyman, playing both solo and with existing groups, like KickStart Rumble, DJ Crespo, several members of RadaRada and as many of Buffalo's finest performers in fun and unique venues.
METHODS USED
For beginners of any age, I begin by discussing goals, milestones, and how we will achieve them. I do use method books, but only recommend those that will be useful in and out of lessons. I keep lessons fun and engaging, and always demonstrate before expecting the student to do the same. Fundamentals as building blocks are always needed, but I never keep a learning plan the same from student to student- goals (that can always be changed) are what I use to guide a student to be confident for any performance.
LESSON STYLE
My passion is music and spreading that joy to others. Each student is different and special. I find ways to tap into the potential of all students (of any age), and assist them in goal setting, using music as a tool in many ways, and building the confidence to continue adding music- performance or not- into their lives. I took a very non-traditional path into music as a career, but I love guiding others in their musical pursuits from a viewpoint of someone who made missteps along my journey, and strive to be the best musician and teacher I can be.
