I have been teaching lessons on Sax and Electronic music for over 10 years combined. I love sharing my knowledge and experiences over the years. I have been very fortunate to work with some amazing musicians in my life. I toured with a 14 piece funk band through a good portion of the '90s and I know what it takes to have a successful journey on the road. I love when the "ah ha" moment that happens when I'm teaching. When someone 'gets' it, I feel that I have succeeded. I take great pride in teaching.
Through the years I have taught a variety of artists in the home or my studio. Most recently I've incorporated Skype to be able to work with more international based students. I'm a huge technology geek and love to incorporate it when applicable. I also teach Electronic Music Production and Performance for Ableton Live. Now that many more people have access to high-speed internet I can work with a more diverse group of people. Whether it's in my Chicago studio, or as far as Australia I'm eager to help.
When I am introduced to a new potential student I try to assess the level of interest, and the reason behind the desire to take up an instrument. I also like to understand what the extracurricular activities are that may create a roadblock when it comes to practicing. As a father of 2 boys 8 and 11, I know the number of distractions, homework, and how life can get in the way. I enjoy working with everyone from the casual enthusiast, to the dedicated pupil. To me, the desire has to be very strong to sustain the level of commitment it takes to pursue studying an instrument.
My teaching style is a mix of fun and discipline. I love to joke around and I feel that humor can help calm the nerves. Humor helps create a bond, and when we bond we show that we care. The student needs to care just as much as the teacher, and when we put these things together we form a great student/teacher relationship. I also know when it's time to be serious and focus on the lesson. Children of all ages get bored and frustrated from time to time. Through my experience working with a variety of skill levels, it's key to be able to notice when someone may be "drifting" and needs to be anchored again.
