I am a professional musician...opera singer, voice and piano teacher, and modest organist. I am originally from Chicago. I have both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music and Pedagogy. I've sung with Chicago Opera Theater, several symphonies, and have given numerous recitals in Chicago and the Boston area. I have been teaching over 25 years, both voice and piano. Several of my students have performed locally and have also won local contests. Becoming a musical artist takes work and coordination between teacher and student. Music is also healthy for your brain. When I teach I work seriously on what needs to be done but also have some fun too. We are all individuals and that's how I approach each student. Your instruction is for you. And you never know what you just might accomplish.
I've been teaching over 25 years, both voice and piano. No one size fits all. I teach each individual as an individual. We start with the basics of the musical instrument. I use Method books which guides the student through musical concepts gradually. The student practices during the week so that we can move on to the next lesson. With voice I work on proper production of tone and breath support. I use songs that are appropriate the student's ability at that time. Consistent practice will help the student move forward. There is also the opportunity to perform in yearly recitals. This helps the student feel accomplished even at a beginners level. You can do this!
For young piano students I'm a fan of John Thompson method books. I get the student through beginners and then through at least the Grade 1 book. Then I introduce beginner piano literature books to help the student see a real music book. I work on music theory and how to map out a piece of music to learn it better. We start talking about musical style as well. For adults I use basically the same method but usually start with the Alfred all-in-one book. It's a good comprehensive approach for an older person. Then the same applies to music literature books and recitals. For voice I follow the same general rules for younger singers and adults. I use vocal exercises appropriate to their level and age. We work on breathing and proper support for the voice, as well as vocal health. Consistency helps the student improve and get more comfortable with the act of singing. And again, recitals are available so the student can learn how to present what they've learned.
My teaching style is me. I work one on one with each individual student as to their age, ability and how they learn. No one size fits all and each individual learns the same concept a bit differently. I make sure both piano and voice students understand fully what the lessons are about so they can practice at home and move forward, and understand. We have fun because I'm nuts...have a sense of humor. I absolutely love to see my students in recitals. It's so rewarding to see your students performing what they've learned whether it's simple or more advanced. I love personal achievement and gouding my students in that direction.
