I'm a multi-instrumentalist and composer with over 15 years of teaching experience. I have been playing and composing for over 20 years. I'm passionate about composition, improvisation, music theory, and microtonal music in particular. I'm also trained in classical, jazz, and contemporary styles, as well as a capable producer and arranger. I am encouraging and patient and believe that clear communication and respect is essential to have fun and learn. I believe that all people are capable of improvisation and composition, they just need a spark of inspiration.
I have been playing cello, piano, and bass for over 20 years. I have played in various orchestras and ensembles including the University of Puget Sound Symphony and the International Honor Orchestra in Vienna, Austria. I have focused on teaching adults and kids for the last 10 years. My diverse training in many styles of music has informed my teaching style. Helping students learn to improvise and compose has been one of the highlights of teaching. I love seeing the expression on people's face when they realize "I can do that?!"
For both beginners and more experienced musicians, I keep each lesson custom. While a lesson book series such as Suzuki will often be at the center of some lessons, It is my goal to help you play music you want to hear. My approach to teaching technique is informed by various sources, but is driven by science. It is important to know how an instrument works to be able to make it work. I work to dispel misconceptions about music and the physics of sound to make sure that all my students have a solid foundation.
The most important aspect of my teaching style is that lessons should be easy going fun (it is music after all). Low stress and high encouragement lead to increased desire to practice. I work with various materials, including school assigned books such as "All for Strings". Students are also encouraged to request their favorite music and I will do my best to provide an appropriate arrangement for the student's skill level. I focus on ergonomics and tone first to make sure students can produce a pleasing sound without strain.
