Overview:

Born in Tehran, I began playing the santour at the age nine. While studying with Mr. Behnam Mehrabi I found a deep spiritual desire to study music, an "unexplainable souvenir from the eternal truth". A graduate from San Francisco State University, I'm a Nagle Scholar, and the only World/Jazz music major in Northern California, with Persian santour as his primary instrument. As a fulltime musician, I'm active in the fields of performance, composition, ethnomusicology, and teaching. I have been fortunate to continue my education in music - as a "never ending project" - with master musicians such as Mohammad Reza Lotfi, Hossein Omoumi, Royal Hartigan, and Hafez Modirzadeh. I am now continuing the path of music in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology as a graduate student in University of California, Irvine, while receiving the Graduate Diversity Fellowship. In late 2007 and early 2008, I was invited  by UCI, UCLA, and UCSC and Society of Ethnomusicology to give lectures and demonstrate the Iranian music on santour. As a recipient of many scholarships and grants such as the Meet the Composer, I have a passion for understanding the intricacies of the human mind and the world around me and refers to "thinking" as my hobby.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching Persian santur for 16 years and enjoyed being a music faculty for four years.

METHODS USED

I enjoy teaching and incorporate many different teaching styles after getting to know my student. After a while I personalize my teaching style for specific students for them go through this path easily and effectively. I consider my class a serious type, however I try to make my class fun and interesting. Before registering in my class, I would like to ask you to do a good search about my works and the instrument I teach. I consider this path a project that requires my student and I to work together in order to achieve goals. I usually start with Pashang Kamkar's "Shiveh-ye santurnavazi", however I select methods and songs from various composers and musicians to broaden the techniques and views of the student about this instrument,. Depending on the student, aside from the very detailed, technical and practical practices for santur, I also introduce text books. In all, I try to introduce different aspects of santur and music (i.e. history, improvisation, composition, ethnomusicology and ... ) while focus on hardcore santur playing techniques.
