Overview:
I am passionate about music and I love sharing my knowledge with students. I graduated in 2001 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical guitar Performance. I have performed in many halls in Brazil and in the US. I have been playing as a soloist and as a member of chamber music ensembles. For instance, I toured in Brazil with a guitar quintet in three different states. In the US I was playing in a guitar duo for the past two years. Further, I have substituted guitarists in some ensembles, such as the guitar quartet from the St Louis Classical Guitar.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since I finished my undergrad program. At the beginning of my lessons, I get to know the student, his skills and musical tastes. Later I try to encourage students to discover new music in order to develop their personal identity. I believe that the more music you know, the better you are going to find your own style. Depending on the student's goals I can provide some guidance on how to become a professional. I also encourage all my students to perform in order to improve their skills.
METHODS USED
I teach kids with Frederick Noad's Guitar Solo Playing and also I adopt the guitar curriculum created by Austin Classical Guitar. Both methods provide several pieces that the kid plays with the teacher. In this way, while the kids play simple notes/lines and start developing some skills (musical and technical), they are making beautiful music together with the teacher or other students. I worked as a teacher assistant using the Austin Guitar Curriculum at Adams Elementary School (St Louis), and the results were great.
For adults, I focus on their musical taste and I try to encourage the student to learn songs and solo pieces. I can teach music, according to the student's desire, using tabs, chords or musical notation. I also encourage my students to develop different skills, such as ear training and theory.
LESSON STYLE
I believe music is about expression and it is rewarding to find a way to help students to develop their own style. Therefore, it is important to know the student's needs and wants in order to establish a lesson plan. After reaching this first step it is easy to create some goals for each lesson. When the student feels that his needs and wants are fulfilled in the lessons, s/he gets more confident to work on new challenges. This constant build-up of knowledge and expression is the main motor to improve musical skills.
