Overview:
I am a composer whose formative training and experience was in Italy and in the past seven years I have been working and studying in the United States. I received my DMA in composition in May 16, 2014. Between my work in Italy and the US I have 20 years of teaching experience and ten years as professional pianist. I was born in Rome and received a Master's degree in composition as well as diplomas in piano performance and chamber music from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. I also graduate from University of Bologna with a MA in music and semiotics and from Binghamton Univeristy with a Master in composition. In the past years I have been an active composer, piano teacher and lecturer in the Madison (WI) area. This is what a father of one of my private students wrote about me: "With Filippo’s guidance Owen won a competition for composition that included all high school students in the state. He was in 7th grade at the time. If that were not enough, Filippo also helped Owen in his performances as well, teaching him from Bach’s well-tempered. His instruction also helped Owen place in a state-wide competition for high school students.I cannot express how grateful we are to Filippo for his instruction. Beyond the music accomplishments, he was a role model for my Owen. He taught him the joy of music, and the work and play that goes into the creative process." Andrew Ladd, Phd Madison, WI
EXPERIENCE
I have experience teaching in the context of both American and European curricula traditions. I have taught music theory (including counterpoint), composition, analysis, orchestration and piano in classroom settings at the university level and also in private, public, and college preparatory schools; I have also taught composition one-on-one. In the US at the college level my teaching career includes five years of experience as a teaching assistant in music theory including the subjects of solfège and aural skills, counterpoint; I have also led workshops in music analysis, piano and composition with students ranging from middle schools to college level.
METHODS USED
In my piano teaching I have devoted time in collecting pieces for all levels and abilities. I believe students should learn from a piece of music rather than a book of sterile excersices. As such, I am a great supporter of those pieces written for children by composers. One example for all is Bartok's Mikrokosmos, where each piece is a migniature composition for children. I have used Bartok's Mikrokosmos for more than 15 years and also made my beginner students write small pieces based on those principles found in Mikrokosmos. To complement this approach I choose pieces from all genre and music styles for more advance students. I integrate piano lessons with aural skills and theory as I believe they are indespensable during the learning process.
LESSON STYLE
I use the score to pose questions about the way musical material is organized, how it reflects the composer’s ideas, and what makes the score coherent to the player and the listener. In this way, a score is one point of focus for developing interest and a questioning attitude—practices that will serve students for a lifetime. I believe that our ability to talk about music emerges from the experience of “thinking music” as performers and that we truly learn music by using its grammar. On the other hand, I put emphasis on the way our body experience music, how the piano technique is basically a natural gesture that becomes sound.

Filippo assessed all the bad habits I had acquired, and is getting me back on track to the fundamentals I need to possess in order to increase my skills. Filippo is very patient and kind. I couldn't ask for a better teacher.
