2019 - Exceptional Contribution and Leadership in the Graduate Music Vocal Performance Program - NYU
I'm a Brazilian Professional Singer and Voice Teacher based in New York City. I received my Master’s Degree in Music with concentration in Classical Vocal Performance from New York University and my Bachelor’s in Music with concentration in Conducting from FAAM, a university located in São Paulo, where I was born and raised. My musical path started at the age of ten, as a classical pianist. My passion and curiosity for many art forms led me to explore choir and orchestral conducting, acting, and singing. Later I realized that as an Opera Singer I would finally be able to unite these different means of expression. I'm currently part of 3 Opera Companies in the city, The Opera Collective, International Brazilian Opera Company, and Opera Dell'Arte Ensemble and I've been teaching Voice for over 5 years.
I’ve been teaching voice for over 5 years. My student’s ages range from 10 to 80 and they are In different levels and have different goals/interests. Although I’m classically trained and I have many students following a classical path, using the bel canto technique, I’m able to provide the student with tools to sing any genre, and for that I use a Cross Training technique, which embraces classical and vernacular styles, such as pop, rock, musical theater, Brazilian music (like samba and bossa nova).
Regardless the ability level of the students and their goals, in the lessons I cover the two pillars of vocal art: Technique and Expressivity. We will work on our posture, breath management, resonance balance, articulation, registers and we will also focus on the dramatic part of singing, creating a dramatic circumstance for each song we explore. There must be a reason for you to say the words you are saying, singing is about sharing a message! I always provide my students with recordings of the exercises we do in class, so that they can practice during the week. I constantly show images of the vocal instrument, It’s really important for the student to understand their mechanism, and when teaching young people I share the same information but using a more digestible vocabular. For the songs, whenever it’s possible, we use the music score, so that I can introduce music theory little by little. We use accompaniments that are available online or I record myself playing the instrumental part on the piano.
As a teacher I try to create an environment that is supportive, nurturing, safe, and I always want my students to have a pleasant time learning. I’m dedicated, passionate about music, about teaching, about sharing and learning. I believe that the role of a teacher is to give to the students the tolls for them to become their own teachers, meaning, trusting their ears, their sensations, their instincts, and knowing how to use these tolls. I want them to become more and more independent, being able to make decisions, and that is how they are gonna find their own voices as artists.
