I'm an organized and punctual instructor with a passion for music and music education. In 2017, I graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition. Although my degree is in composition, I am also an accomplished percussionist, guitarist and ukulele player. While in college, I realized more and more that I had a passion for teaching music. Once I graduated, I began teaching full time at a private school for grades JK-4th. In addition to teaching, I play electric guitar with my local church band and I spend my free time composing original music.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in my first year of college when I started working for a company that organized after school programs for hundreds of schools across the Chicagoland area. With this company, I taught many group guitar classes for almost 4 years. In this time, I taught hundreds of students and I learned that each individual student is different and must be treated as such. After leaving this company in 2017, I began teaching full time at a private school for grades JK-4th. This experience has given me a greater understanding of students 5-12 years old and it is my favorite age range to teach.
METHODS USED
For most of my beginner students, I start with Alfred's Basic Method Book series (The only exception is Ukulele; I use the Hal Leonard's Ukulele Method Book). Beyond that, I work with each student to decide on songs and techniques that they would like to learn. I also make time in each lesson to introduce students to new music that showcases their instrument. As students progress, students will bring in their own examples for us to discuss together. I believe communication is the key to every student/teacher relationship. As the teacher, it is very important for me to teach what you want to learn on your instrument beyond the basics.
LESSON STYLE
The most important part of playing music is having fun! Music is about expressing yourself and you shouldn't be stressed out about learning how to do that. Each student has unique strengths and weaknesses and it's very important to learn each student's routines and habits. With this in mind, I will create an environment that facilitates encouragement and constructive criticism. As a teacher, I will always encourage my students, but they will get out what they put into it. The more you are willing to learn, the more I will teach you.
