Overview:
I am a passionate educator and musician and I love sharing the joys music has brought me with people young and old. Music has taken me to some amazing places and let me meet some amazing people, and I love sharing the things that have helped me with others. I was fortunate enough to have gone to the New England Conservatory and study with such greats as Dave Holland, Cecil Mcbee, John Lockwood, Lincoln Goines, John Mcneil, Frank Carlberg, and Bob Moses. I've played in the U.S., and around Europe and Australia. Music is an amazing thing, and sharing it is a beautiful thing.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching for about 8 years now. I've taught privately and with different institutions. I've taught at the University of Miami's young musicians camp, and at New England Conservatory's Jazz Lab. I've had many private students over time, many who have been with me for years and some that have gone on to great schools like Berklee. I encourage getting out there and playing and putting onself in situations that push your understanding. I find that playing with others is when people really get into music and get x22hookedx22. It feels great to create with others, and the validation from understanding x22I can do thisx22 is invaluable. I try to keep a modern approach to things as well, focusing on how people make music today as opposed to 20 years ago. When a student feels he is creating at his highest level and learning in the process that's when I know my mission is accomplished.
METHODS USED
For beginners I go through the mechanics of the instrument and I try to select easy songs that help in basic instrument navigation. I also use basic sight reading as a method to get to know the instrument. I encourage playing along with recorded music. After basic mastery of the instrument is acheived I try to bring new concepts to the lesson each time. I make personalized backing tracks for each student to practice with. Also, I try to work on repertoire, but often times make references to overarching concepts so the student can create in his/her own capacity. I also encourage asking questions and generally ask what it is the student wants to work on.
LESSON STYLE
I like to see students develop their own music language and creative abilities. I encourage questions, and for the student to take charge of lesson. I try to cater to the wants of the student. At the same time, I cover basic things any musician would need to navigate music. There are certain basics everyone needs to know. I try to put students in real life playing situations by making personalized backing tracks. I've found this really helps. Once students feel engaged, I find they really start enjoying lessons.
