I am excited to be a full-time drum instructor. I teach snare drum and/or whole drum kit. I began playing drums in high school and have continued playing music for over 25 years. I have live performance and studio recording experience. I was taught by 2 private teachers as well as a high school band instructor and university jazz professor. My home studio is equipped with 2 drum sets (one for rock and one for jazz). I also have an area for practice pad/snare drum work. I teach students of all levels but usually start with ages 10 and up. I can teach lessons online with Skype, please inquire if that is an interest.
I began teaching private lessons full time recently and have my own home studio for in-person and online Skype lessons. I always felt my passion was to become a teacher and I also have self-published my own drum rudiment book called "Learning Rudiments". I am a serious student of the drums as I regularly take online lessons, watch practice videos, and listen to drum teaching podcasts to pick up the latest advice. I want to inspire students to learn all they can about drumming and become the best musicians possible.
For beginning and intermediate students, I offer my own rudiment book to start learning on a practice pad or snare drum. For learning drum set, I use a variety of books and resources. I will meet and discuss these options with each student to find the right book for them. For more advanced students, I have them transcribe entire songs from bands they enjoy. I create Spotify playlists for students so they can easily access a variety of styles of music. I also believe that students should attend music concerts occasionally to see live drummers and learn to understand how drums fit into different musical contexts.
I believe that a good teacher is one that listens well and brings out the best qualities in their students. I will help young students learn the basics of drumming from rudiments, technique, and sight-reading. For more advanced students I am able to guide them into more complex topics such as musical creativity, feel, and improvisation. I will also be able to help students with the behavioral and psychological aspects of consistent practicing and live performing as I have a background in psychology. I hope to inspire all students to learn and appreciate drumming and more broadly, how music can provide an uplifting and rich experience throughout their lives.
