M.M. in Composition, Michigan St. University B.M. in Music Theory, Michigan St. University
Overview:
I have been working as a professional musician and instructor for almost 30 years, beginning in my teens. I am fortunate that after the age of 20, I have never worked outside the music profession. I originally worked as a drummer, then switched my primary focus to piano when I began my junior year in college. I graduated from Michigan St. University in the 90's with both a Bachelor's in Music Theory, and a M.M. in Composition. I feel that my background in theory and composition has provided me with an open awareness to the art of music, and has allowed me the freedom to make important and informed decisions in the endeavor of piano performance.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my teen years. I began teaching drums at a local music store when I was a senior in high school, as I was already playing professionally with a local band. I continued when I went to college, teaching both piano and drums to kids and adult beginners, as well as college students on campus. This continued into my graduate studies, where I was also a Music Theory T.A. for two years. Currently, I am able to incorporate these broad, related teaching concepts (rhythm/percussion-based, piano-based, and theory/structure-based) into one coherent package.
METHODS USED
I actually do not have a specific method of instruction. Due to the fact that I teach multiple styles, I approach each student based on their particular needs and experience. I do, however, incorporate the study of technique and basic harmonic progressions with all styles of study, whether one is learning a jazz standard, a show tune, or a classical sonata. I do not approach technique with the standard, potential rigidity for which it is usually associated; I try to keep it open and creative. My primary goal in teaching is to allow the student to discover and broaden their own awareness of musical structure and, hopefully, have this become a fulfilling experience.
LESSON STYLE
I approach students needs on an individual basis. Aside from establishing a general grounding in technique and structure, I tend to be rather open to the student's desire and potential for finding their own"voice" (though some exception is made for the Classical tradition of period/genre related style performance practices). I also encourage students to listen to experience performers, stressing their need to focus on details, and even open a critical discussion as to a performer's approach to his or her interpretation.
