2009-2011 Elton John Scholarship, Royal Academy of Music, London
Overview:
British/Canadian violinist, Freya C, combines a busy and varied performance schedule as a soloist, chamber musician and collaborative artist. She regularly performs in venues across the UK, which have included appearances at Royal Festival Hall, Cadogan Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, as well as throughout Europe, in such concert halls as the Festspielhaus (Salzburg), Herculessaal (Munich), Sendesaal (Bremen) and Brucknerhaus (Linz). She has appeared as a concerto soloist on a number of occasions and has given many performances at the Edinburgh Fringe, Aldeburgh, Brighton Fringe and Salzburg Kammermusik Festivals. Freya has also held several orchestral positions, including with the Salzburg Philharmonie and European Union Youth Orchestras, and has played in a wide range of chamber ensembles, most notably as second violinist of the Rose Quartet; an international collaboration. Currently, Freya is excited for the imminent release of her first album, featuring the little known, yet very beautiful, 10 Caprices for Solo Violin by Sonia Eckhardt-Gramatté.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching violin for over 10 years. Growing up in a family of musicians meant that I was always helping out in the music school run by my parents; as a violin teacher, ensemble coach and a practice supervisor. I began my own class of students in London, and also assisted my own professor in his teaching. I like to build up a strong technique on the instrument with my students, and apply this to the repertoire that they are working on. I believe that a really strong foundation is key to playing the music that you really love. I strongly encourage my students to perform as much as possible and help with setting up informal performance opportunities. I want to make my students excited and passionate about the violin and about music!
METHODS USED
I customize each of my lessons to fit the needs of each particular student. I take into account the goals of each student, and this is something we will discuss regularly. We will typically spend some time on various technical exercises and studies, and then work on different pieces that we will choose together. I always like to hear if there is a certain piece that the student would like to play and will try to incorporate this into our plan. I also like to draw on a few different teaching methods, including the Suzuki method.
LESSON STYLE
Watching students progress and fall in love with music is deeply rewarding for me. I approach my teaching in a fun and friendly way, using our outlined goals to guide us through learning the instrument. I like to help my students set up their own customized practice schedule and will make notes throughout our lesson so that the student is completely clear on what they must do on their own, With every new element that I introduce, I work on it until I see understanding from the student, so I can see that they know what to work on. Our lessons will be structured and fun!
