BM, Berklee College of Music, Contemporary Writing & Production / Drumset Performance
Overview:
I began my relationship with much when I starting playing drums at age 7. I played in percussion in school bands for a few years then I found the drum set. I found discipline and independence through the drum set, and soon started learning guitar and piano. I attended Berklee College of Music for Contemporary Writing & Production, with a focus in Drumset performance. While at Berklee, I played drumset/percussion in musical theater productions for other Boston colleges (Boston Conservatory, Emerson) and played with local bands in the Boston area. After college I joined some fellow alumni starting a music school in Millburn, NJ, focusing on instilling passion in my students by catering to their unique personality and interests. I continue to work with a few bands around the NYC/NJ area, as well as a drummer/composer for hire.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching as a side gig in college. I found I loved connecting with students, and helping them along their musical journey.
Once I graduated I began teaching at a music school started by some fellow alumni. There I was able to refine my teaching style and focus on stimulating creativity in my students. I've taught students of all ages- as well as many students with special needs, helping them use music as a medium for creative expression.
METHODS USED
I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc.
My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. I try to keep the content related to each student's interests, but am also comfortable teaching a more traditional method as well.
