Overview:
Hi I’m Gabriel, and I’m a self taught full time musician. I picked up my first instrument at age 9 and began playing professionally at age 12. In 2016 I graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a bachelors of arts degree in instrumental performance. Since I began my professional career I’ve played for a wide range of local, national and international artists. My love for playing music is unexplainable and my love for helping others achieve their musical goals is just as satisfying. I believe that music can change lives, and if I can be a part of helping change a life then im willing to give it my all.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in my late teenage years through a summer program provide through my church. The program is a week long program for kids ages 4-18 and during the program I gave lessons to over 15 students. Shortly after, I began to advertise my ability to give private instruction. Through self advertisement I gained a few adult students and began giving private instruction to earn money. Since then I’ve gained students through recommendations and word of mouth. Most of my students come because they hear that my lessons are fun and engaging. My motto is to keep lessons engaging and fun otherwise students won’t stick to it, and thus far my motto has been proven to be successful.
METHODS USED
For all students during the first lesson I have them play something regardless of their skill level. Based on personal experience I’ve noticed that not all students have the same level of ability. For example in drum lessons I’ve had some entry level students sit down and play a groove and have another sit down and have no coordination. After determining the students ability level, my next step is to determine what the students likes. I find that incorporating everyday things into the lessons will engrave them into the students minds resulting and better performance and faster progression.
LESSON STYLE
One of the best things to experience is watching someone progress. I began teaching because I wanted to help others and share my musical abilities. During lessons one of my main focuses is to promote encouragement. After encouragement is passion, because with passion come everything else. When you have passion and love what you’re playing you have fun. And when you have fun you stick to it. I help students find passion by catering to their needs. I do that by simply finding out what they enjoy. And when I find what they love I teach it to them. For ex. teaching them how to play their favorite songs or to play the theme song from their favorite tv show. Small things like this are what keeps students engaged and exited about lessons. The excited created bring pure joy to students and that joy bring peace and happiness to me.
