Gabe B. is a freelance saxophonist, composer, and educator based in New York City. Originally from Curitiba, Brazil, he moved to the United States at age 12 and developed a love for jazz and the saxophone. Gabe has performed professionally in a wide variety of contexts including extensive jazz, pop, and musical theater work, cruise ship showbands, and off-broadway touring. Gabe earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of South Carolina, Summa Cum Laude. He earned his Master of Music Degree in Performance from Western Michigan University, where he also taught collegiate classes and private lessons as a graduate assistant. Gabe was recognized for outstanding performances during his studies in Downbeat Magazine as well as numerous jazz festivals. Gabe has experience teaching students of all levels, and enjoys teaching and playing a diverse range of music on the saxophone.
I have experience teaching from beginner through advanced students. I began teaching during college, working with a local high school band camp. As I progressed and transitioned from being a student to a professional musician, I began to take on more students, and I throughly enjoy helping others reach their musical goals. I have experience teaching at the collegiate level as a graduate assistant during my Master's program at Western Michigan University. There, I taught a woodwind methods course, tutored music theory, and taught private saxophone lessons for credit to music minors and some music education majors.
I tailor my materials, method, and philosophies to the ability and goal of each student. Typically, regular students can expect lessons to cover fundamental aspects of playing the saxophone (embouchure development, technique exercises, etc..) as well as the music and etudes we may be covering. For students with an interest in music theory or improvisation, I like to learn those things alongside common jazz standards so that the knowledge you obtain can be immediately applied in a real musical setting.
I like to be a positive and encouraging teacher. I believer that by fostering a positive and safe environment, I can help students feel free to take chances and develop in a way that feeds into and grows their love of music. I stress fundamentals regardless of the preferred style of music that a student might be pursuing. Each student comes with different interests, learning styles, and a unique way of approaching problem solving. I strive to treat each student as an individual during their music studies.
