Overview:
I taught myself how to play the clarinet when I was 13 years old. In high school, I was accepted in to the California All State Honor Band my junior and senior years (2007, 2008). The experiences I had powerful and emotional impact on me, and it was then that I decided to dedicate a life to music through my clarinet. In 2013, I graduated from CSU Fullerton with a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and I am currently working on completing my Masters of Music degree there as well. My musical involvements at school are focused in my performances with the CSUF Wind Symphony and the CSUF Symphony Orchestra, where I served as the principal clarinet for our last concert season. While I've been in college ,I've been fortunate to play in music festivals in both the US (Hawaii Performing Arts Festival) and Canada (Domaine Forget) and toured with the CSU Fullerton Wind Symphony in Portugal and China. I'm passionate about making music that I can share with others and, as a teacher, I hope to inflect that same passion within my students.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching clarinet privately in 2012 during my undergraduate career and have been teaching students consistently ever since. I often encourage my students to bring in music that they would like to learn because working on music that you are inspired by and excited about encourages practicing (the same goes for me too!). I encourage students to enter as many performance opportunities as they can, especially since I am an avid performer myself, and am looking to expand my studio so that I can create student recitals where my students will be able to share their music and perform for each other. I strongly believe that when students perform in front of their peers, it not only boosts their confidence but it shows them that they are capable of making music and how they can use that to move the audience in a positive way, which is something I channel in both my playing and my teaching.
METHODS USED
My main focus in my teaching, regardless of the level of the student, hones in on strengthening the fundamentals of playing clarinet (air, mouth position, posture, finger position, etc). When the student has a strong set of fundamentals, there's no limit to what they can do or play. If the student is more in the beginning stages of learning clarinet, I will mostly focus on these for the first two or three lessons before we advance on to playing music. For adults, lessons are centered more around what they want to accomplish out of their playing while focusing on learning their fundamental skills.
LESSON STYLE
When I start with a student, I try to find out what kind of goals they have in learning about clarinet. Whether it's just to learn how to play a few songs or if they want to audition into music school, I channel wherein music their passion lies into my teaching. Regardless of their goals, my hope is that with all of my students, I can give them a new perspective of music and help develop the same passion I found in clarinet within their learning and music making. There is no greater reward to me than having a student walk away from a lesson feeling more inspired to play.
