I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2018, I graduated from Belhaven University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. I perform with small ensembles and perform/direct in church organizations. I have been teaching private lessons since my sophomore year of college. Since graduating, I have also been in formal music classrooms at schools while continuing to expand my private studio. It has been a wonderful experience to teach music in these capacitiees.
I began teaching privately in college. I also was a teacher assistant to a music teacher at a local elementary school during my undergraduate years. Now as a professional educator, I teach middle school choir, private piano/violin lessons, play for my church, and, at times, direct my church choir as well. I love to encourage the art and discipline of practice and passion. I love to encourage students with recitals, awards, and celebrating each of their accomplishments on their journey of music education.
For beginning students who are children, I usually start with a hodge podge of the Alfred Piano Series and the Suzuki Piano series. I also make sure that they have a holistic music education by including the study of music theory as well. For my adult students, I teach at the pace they are interested in learning using the Adult Alfred Piano series. I teach according to the student's ability and work on polishing strengths as well as building up weaknesses. My younger students usually take a while to progress through the curriculum, but their technique is stronger. Adult students tend to move quickly through the curriculum, but it is harder for them to master proper playing technique.
I have a very classical approach to teaching. This means that I focus on mastery learning. I don't move a student to the next level without first seeing mastery of the skill being taught. I believe it is important that each student progress at their own pace, but I also believe in pushing towards difficult, but realistic goals. I make an effort to acknowledge their accomplishments and fostering an eagerness to learn even on the days were learning is hard. My teaching strengths lie in knowing what inspires my students, but also motivating them to practice when practicing gets tough.
