I have been in Chicago for almost 15 years, started studying flute in Costa Rica when I was 12y/o. I speak English, Spanish and Portuguese and love cultures, languages, and music from everywhere. I have a Masters degree in Flute performance and a Post Masters that specializes in Orchestral Playing, I enjoy playing anything from Brazilian Choros to Mahler and flute concerti. Can't think of a world without music! Teaching has been something I truly enjoy doing as it is exciting to see the students improvement and joy when they reach a new goal.
I have been teaching flute since 2001. Worked as my teacher's assistant in Costa Rica and then started my own studio. I teach for the People's Music School Youth Orchestras program, Chicago Youth Symphony and other organizations. I liked working with students of all levels, from beginners to college and even people who are preparing for professional auditions and competitions. Feel comfortable with a big variety of repertoire and with the individual difficulties and skills of each student! It is a pleasure to learn from teaching.
I have made my own program of technique exercises, sound production and development techniques and adapt it to the needs of the student. Each person learns differently and I find it more exciting to change based on their strengths and needs. I feel confident and very happy to work with beginners because they can learn the basics with the best technique and this will facilitate their development and music knowledge. We like what we are good at, so if we do it right from the beginning, the chances of being good and get better are higher this way.
Learning how to play well a musical instrument will bring together a set of skills that are very useful for anyone. It helps develop discipline, commitment, responsibility, focus, memorization, fine motor skills, attention to detail, body awareness, etdc. All these skills are required for any successful career and way of living. Everytime a student accomplishes something, it will make them enjoy the work done and make them believe they can reach a new and harder level. They will approach a musical problem in many different ways and learn that any given problem has different solutions
