As you now know my name is Galina, I've played piano on and off over the years since I was ten years old. I got started out on an undersized keyboard with a flat pedal I had to stomp playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Mary had a Little Lamb like any other fresh-faced student. I continued to raise the bar through high school, graduating to a spinet, and upright, and finally a full sized grand piano on a college stage where I performed Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, as well as accompanied accomplished vocal students in vigorous competitions. In addition to my curricular musical studies on campus I also played for church services on Sundays at numerous locations throughout North Carolina stretching from Jacksonville to Wilmington as well as High Schools and even formal Valentine and Christmas Parties at the Officers Club at the Camp Lejeune Military Base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. So from the classical stage to the front of a church and finally behind a rock and roll keyboard where I performed locally in Jacksonville and surrounding cities with my brothers in a rock band. We formed the foursome for fun in a garage including drums, electric and base guitar and jamming out before taking off with photoshoots and costumes on stage at local parties and venues, finally taking our setlist to the studio and laying down a recorded album.
My experience in teaching actually started with my little brother - I taught him to ride horses at a stable around the corner. From there I branched out, teaching others to ride and starting yet another brother on the piano as my very first piano student. Personable and fun, my weekly lessons expanded into an independent studio and before I knew it I had a full week teaching over forty students whose ranging from a precotial age four to a feisty seventy-four! At the end of the year I held a recital around Christmas at a local church where each student played a selected song or two they'd worked on dedicatedly throughout the year and performed beautifully for family and friends.
My methods are fairly simple and straight-forward! I emphasize a good, solid basic ability to sight read and understand theory. Without a good base the rest of the building would be unstable. If I'm working with a beginner I prefer to use a mixture of Thompson and Michael Aaron to solidify the basics and branch out from there based on the students aptitudes and preferences. I like the student to always have a favorite song on the side of any educational book as well, often a Disney song or simple hymn which very frequently become their passion and recital piece! If the student is more advanced I like to take them where they're at, continuing the curriculum they'd already begun and continuing from there based on interest and the desire to challenge them.
My teaching style is laid back but progressive. Students generally find they relish the feeling of achievement and the satisfaction of a well-played song which then motivates them throughout to week to continue to attain that level of expertise in their lessons fueled by my own encouragement. More than anything I desire that the student AND myself have an enjoyable and educational experience which naturally will effect other areas of their life and sow seeds that will grow and branch out into limitless possibilities in their present and futures as well.
