I am a very creative minded and passionate person when it comes to music! Before deciding to pursue my Contemporary Music degree in 2012, I had been an active guitar player, drum player, and singer for regular church services. Today, my focus is on sharing that same passion for music with others in order for them to express themselves in a unique way. I have been blessed with the opportunity to play with many bands and artists such as Colton Dixson, Robinson Park, as well as recording many others!
I have been teaching ever since I graduated from High School and gained a more in-depth study of music at Bryan College. So far, I have led over a dozen students to at least an intermediate level of knowledge in percussion and stringed instruments. My favorite part of the teaching process is to observe a gradual development in the student's skill level after months of practice and discipline. the progression of small successes is the proof of true progress! It will be very rewarding for you or your child to see how far you come from the first lesson.
For beginning students or children, I will start teaching the importance of note value on printed music. Whether it's drums, piano, guitar, or any orchestral instrument, they all share a common thread in melody and rhythm. Once the student has a firm grasp on note value and melody, they will begin to learn simple songs that gradually increase in difficulty. By the time they reach an intermediate level of knowledge, they will bring their own favorite songs to learn. This is done by relating what they hear to what they can see on paper.
There is nothing more exciting than seeing a student show significant progress while learning a new instrument. I remember the first time that I could correctly play a chord on the guitar. It brought a unique sense of joy and put a smile on my face! Each student also has a different pace at which they learn. While one person may have a higher aptitude for understanding each step of learning an instrument, anyone can progress as long as their mind is set to continuous practice! If you choose to visit my studio for regular lessons, you will hopefully see all aspects of music in a fresh light.
My son, Will, took drum and guitar lessons from Garrett for about a year and we were very pleased with the progress! Not only did Will learn to play these instruments, but Garrett gave good suggestions on equipment purchases so that we could practice at home. I have recommended Garrett to other friends who have all had great experiences.
