Overview:
Playing the piano has been a lifelong passion for me and I am excited for the opportunity to pass on my love and skill for music to anyone who wishes to engage in this rewarding art form. Although I have been involved in several styles of music over my career; gospel, jazz, blues, contemporary Christian, and classical, I have spent most of my life as a church musician. Most recently, I was the worship pastor for a medium sized church in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Additionally, I have played solo gigs and with ensembles in jazz and blues for many years. I am bringing both my passion for the piano as well as several years of experience in teaching all ages of students from beginners through the intermediate level to realize their varied goals.
EXPERIENCE
Times have changed since I began on the piano over fifty years ago. I believe the learning process should be engaging and fun and not the rote practice assignments I had to endure. I believe students should gain a limited orientation to the world of music to identify current artists, genres, and the structures of musical styles popular today. This is accomplished by introducing a play list for listening and learning. I also believe that parents play an important role and a students learning through encouragement and ensuring there is time in the day to devote to practice. Learning an instrument is like playing a sport; the more time you devote, the better skilled the student will be and the more rewarding the experience for the student.
METHODS USED
For most beginners, I use the Bastian series to get students started. this series of instructional books combines basic theory with practical examples that help to reinforce the concepts introduced each week. While working on fundamentals, we introduce performance selections that are fun and engaging. For adult learners, I typically chart a path of instruction based upon their goals and interests. Practice assignments are designed to reinforce the lessons and perfect the technique necessary to reach the desired performance goals.
LESSON STYLE
It is rewarding for me to see students develop their passion for music. And, it's important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I also try to acknowledge accomplishments to fuel a students desire to progress, which gives students incentives to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I have an easy teaching style, honed through years as a pastor and teacher.
