MM, Lehman College, Music Education BFA, California Institue of the Arts, General Music
Overview:
I have devoted my life to making music and sharing my knowledge and expertise with young people. After graduating from CalArts in 1976 I spent over ten years playing and touring professionaly with a variety of top 40/hard rock bands before becoming a music educator. I have recently retired after a 26 year career in the NYC and Mount Vernon public schools. Together with my wife Michelle I enjoy playing & performing singer/songwriter, soft rock & Broadway material. Teaching private lessons gives me the opportunity to pass along my knowledge & experience to many youthful successors.
EXPERIENCE
I began my teaching experience in the Bronx, where I created a music program in a very large public elementary school. In additon to a full schedule of general music classes, I directed over 200 assembly programs involving students from Kindergarten through 4th grade. I also developed an after-school Chorus program, putting on Winter and Spring concerts, as well as several Broadway musicals. In 2001 I transferred to Mount Vernon, where I was able to continue and expand my program, incorporating concert band and all-grade musical performances for students from Pre-K to 6th grade. I began teaching private lessons in 2005, first at the Mount Vernon Music Academy, then at Febbraio School of Music.
METHODS USED
I have been using the Alfred Method Books for my beginning piano students, as they provide a well-rounded program incorporating theory, technique and performance. pieces. Intermediate students should, in my opinion, begin to choose the music they want to work on. I like my students to learn how to read music as well as play by ear, how to practice and how to incorporate theory into performance. Most of all, I want all my students to deeply feel the joy of music making, and discover the vast universe of music that we all can share and enjoy.
LESSON STYLE
I put a lot of energy into my teaching! Providing positive feedback and encouragement is most important. Also, giving students practical ways to improve their playing and meet their perfomance goals is crucial. One of the great benefits for a young person learning a musical instrument in the experience of challening and overcoming their percieved limitations. I feel it is my job to guide my students on this adventure. Because of my many years of experience teaching PK-6 general music, I am able to adapt my style to every age group & ability level.
