Overview:
Playing, performing, and teaching music have been an important part of my life from an early age. While growing up I was surrounded by music and the performance arts. Most everybody in my family sings and/or plays an instrument. I started participating in stage productions as well as playing a ukulele (which I still have!) around the age of three. As young person, I participated in chorus and stage productions as well as a few "garage" bands. By my early twenties I was performing regularly in the tri-state region with South By SouthEast, and The New Point Special, two long running and successful bluegrass bands. Guitars, mandolins, ukes, and basses, (and strings in general) are super-cool to me and I enjoy sharing the joy of music with folks through lessons. I teach theory and technique but I also try to help folks connect with the music that is in all of us. Face it, humans (and many other creatures) are by nature rhythmic, harmonious beings. Heart beats, walking pace and cadence, and the innate ability to recognize the pentatonic scale, are all just a few examples of the natural presence of music we all share. Tapping into that can be challenging but also very rewarding. I really enjoy watching people take that journey of discovery!
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching guitar 21 years ago when a friend of mine asked for some pointers. After working with him for a couple months, it became apparent to me that I was really enjoying sharing the techniques and tricks to more comfortable, relaxed playing. I then pursued a career in teaching music as well as several other disciplines (First Aid/CPR/AED and snowsports). I currently provide instruction to a regular roster of private clients as well as teach guitar to Veterans through the regional chapter of Guitars For Vets Of The Carolinas.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, my methods are centered around melody in the form of easy to play songs and tunes, and developing an understanding for basic theory through rudimentary scales and chord construction. More advanced students are entreated to delve more deeply into melodic playing and advanced scale work through modal play, advanced chordal technique, "tips and tricks for fancy licks", and pointers for breaking down, and understanding the songs you want to play.
LESSON STYLE
My approach is to tailor the cirriculum to the student. Usually, my first question is, "What song is it you want to learn to play?". There are general principles of musical technique and theory that we all can learn from just about any source. But to excell and progress, it really pays to have an instructor that can adjust and augment lessons to more accurately match the students needs and goals. That's where the bulk of my experience comes in handy in the form of individualization and personal connection. I'm also a fond believer in helping folks to recognize (and bring to full potential) the innate rhythm and music in us all.
