Helping Singers realize their "Dream" is my passion. I gained international recognition as a vocal performer of note, having performed on the stages of Acapulco, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, Aruba, Curacao and Buenos Aires, to name a few, as well as major U. S. cities. To date, I have two albums to my credit, "Time Wounds All Heels" and "The 23rd Psalm", the latter containing the highly acclaimed title song that while being performed at the 1984 National Baptist Convention musical in Los Angeles, received a standing ovation by some 6,000 listeners. The "Time Wounds project has become a collectors item and two cuts are still disco house favorites in the United Kingdom.
EXPERIENCE
After finishing college and meeting so many artists seeking help I founded The Gene Townsel Studio of Theatrical and Musical Arts where such artists as "Scat Man" Crothers and Marques Houston of "Immature" now "IMX" were regular clients. As a vocal coach/teacher to professional and aspiring artists for over 40 years, I have used my experience as an Internationally Acclaimed Singer and his formal training (Florida A&M University) as a vocal music major, to help my students develop the tools necessary to be competitive in the industry. I encourage my students to be consistent in practicing technique and not just trying to sound like their favorite artist. The first step is to be able to produce a good tone so before trying runs and ad libs, I emphasis control and color.
METHODS USED
My method makes understanding the breathing, support and execution of the voice the first priority. After this is achieved, exercises are assigned to further develop range, control, strength and vocal agility. The bottom line is that although it takes years to develop a strong, skillful and sensitive singer, it should not take years for a singer with good tutelage and a willingness to work hard, to sing competently. So without the ability of the student to make a good tone and control the voice, all the exercise cds and books are useless. It is also important to determine what the goals of the students are
LESSON STYLE
The technique that I've developed over the years is that while guiding the students through the singing process, I keep them focused on finding and connecting with their voices. Without a sense of "feeling what you're singing, it's difficult at best to connect with an audience. I produce annual showcases to give my students the opportunity to perform.
